Counselling

Counselling that gets results

As an experienced and qualified counsellor, I know how to help you get results. Counselling can get results in many areas of your life. While counselling takes many forms, here are a couple of therapies that I have used with great success.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt has humanistic and existential origins: the objective of Gestalt therapy is to enable people to live a flexible and creative life free from patterns of fixed behaviour that can reduce self growth and a sense of satisfaction in their lives. Gestalt therapy also encourages self responsibility through increasing self awareness in relation to these fixed patterns, and includes a persons body mind spirit and culture. It has origins in Zen Buddhism and teaches the importance of being present in the here and now. Through this process self-awareness emerges.

Gestalt therapy focuses on process (what is actually happening) rather than content (what is being talked about). The emphasis is on what is being done, thought, and felt at the present moment, rather than on what was, might be, could be, or should have been. This is a very useful therapy for dealing with stress. It is living in the present moment.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an integrative approach to treatment that combines the best aspects of cognitive-behavioral, experiential, interpersonal and psychoanalytic therapies into one unified model. Schema-Focused Therapy has shown remarkable results in helping people to change negative ('maladaptive') patterns which they have lived with for a long time, even when other methods and efforts they have tried before have been largely unsuccessful.

The schemas that are targeted in treatment are enduring and self-defeating patterns that typically begin early in life. These patterns consist of negative/dysfunctional thoughts and feelings, have been repeated and elaborated upon, and pose obstacles for accomplishing your goals and getting your needs met. Some examples of schema beliefs are: "I'm unlovable," "I'm a failure," "People don't care about me," "I'm not important," "Something bad is going to happen," "People will leave me," "I will never get my needs met," "I will never be good enough," and so on.
Although schemas are usually developed early in life (during childhood or adolescence), they can also form later, in adulthood.
