When our minds just don’t seem to switch off, then it is time to learn a few strategies which will help us control that switch which can be set to off.
Sometimes it is just as easy as allocating two periods of 10 minutes each day, which will be our worry time.
At all other times when that worry wort comes up, we just say to ourselves “not now, only in the worry block” and then turn our minds to a positive or happy memory.
Now during worry time, you are not allowed to do anything except worry.
Many people at this stage say to me only 10 minutes twice a day? Surely, I will need more time that this!
Now surprisingly they soon find out that it is really hard to fill these worry times.
Remember no happy thoughts are allowed here, so what shall we have for dinner, just all those ruminating thoughts that have been going through your minds all day.
Once you have practiced this and followed the instructions, you will soon find that this is a really useful tool to eliminate those persistent worries.
Another question I ask when worry seizes me is:
Can I do anything about this problem right now?
If the answer is no then I set that problem aside until later and then ask myself the same question.
Once you realise that there is no answer or action at this moment in time, it is easier to move the problem to your worry time.
I hope this is of help.
